Modafinil in the fight against obesity

Antidepressants are among the most controversial drugs of our time. The main function of these drugs is reducing the symptoms of depression. Some drugs have such a side effect as an increase in body weight & a sharp weight loss.

Modafinil in the fight against obesity Although excess weight is closely associated with depression, it can worsen symptoms & become the main reason of it drugs against it are never prescribed for the loss of excess weight.

Uncontrolled consumption of food, according to scientists, can be an attempt to fill the dopamine deficiency.

Modafinil is a drug against narcolepsy available in many pharmacies; it has shown effectiveness in the fight against obesity, which is a consequence of food dependencies.

Researchers have established that the Modafinil use reduces the severity of the impulsive behavior, which plays a significant role in the development of food addiction.

Although the mechanism of action of Modafinil still is not fully studied, it is believed that it alters the concentration of neurotransmitters associated with serotonin & encourages a feeling of vivacity.

In addition, in some studies, it was stated that the use of Modafinil helps increase the level of dopamine. In other studies, it was noted that patients suffering from food dependencies are having a deficiency in certain forms of dopamine. Food is able provoking a release of dopamine. That is why researchers have suggested that uncontrolled absorption of food may be an attempt to fulfill such a deficit.

Professor’s team has noted that Modafinil reduces the severity of impulsive behavior in patients with schizophrenia, ADHD & alcohol dependence. Since impulsive behavior is considered the primary mechanism for the development of food dependencies, scientists have suggested that the drug can help people with the developed obesity.

The researchers had involved 80 healthy men between the ages of 19-32 & divided them into three equal groups. The first 20 participants in the group 1 were given Modafinil, other 20 patients in the group 2 had Atomoxetine (this is a drug for the treatment of ADHD). Other forty volunteers from the group 3 received a placebo.

The scientists are sure now that the intensity of such an impulsive behavior among the “Modafinil” group decreased pretty significantly. Atomoxetine’s effect on self-control was comparable to placebo.

Obesity has become a real problem in many developed countries. So, in the USA more than a third of adults suffer from it. Obesity increases the risk of:

  • stroke
  • heart disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • certain forms of cancer.

Based on the results of their work, researchers argue that the appointment of Modafinil can be an effective strategy to fight obesity.

It has been discovered that Modafinil can influence the impulsive behavior of healthy volunteers. Presumably, the impact on the behavior of people suffering from food addiction because of the dopamine deficiency is more pronounced. This medication can be a real help to people who continue to struggle with the desire to eat something, even realizing that they need to reduce weight. Modafinil strengthens patients’ self-control. Therefore, scientists believe that the drug should help in the fight against this disease.
